The original Porsche 550 Spyder serves as the inspiration for the Boxster line. The 550, of course, was indelibly etched into pop culture when James Dean was killed in one while driving to a race in Salinas, California, right before his final film, Giant, was released.
The first generation was launched as a 1997 model (type 986), and the 2005 model (type 987) continues in production today.
This mid-engine roadster comes with a 2.7 liter flat-six engine putting out 236 hp. At a weight of 3,000 lbs it sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just under 6 seconds, and tops out right around 160 mph.
The 2005 sticker price was roughly $45,000. Maintenance costs can lighten your wallet substantially unless you know a good shop or do the work yourself. KBB at 60k miles is $18,700 which is 41% of original sticker.
