Project MR2: Welding A Doorstop Bracket

I was aware of this slight problem before I bought the car, but never really thought much about it. The driver’s door stop/guide was not attached due to a broken weld, which meant the door would open all the way.

Alex, one of my racing buddies, has welding equipment so we rolled the car into his garage one day and proceeded to reweld the loose bracket.

We took the left front wheel off and removed the fender liner. During this process we had to drill a couple of plastic fasteners out. These things just aren’t made for disassembly.

After that we found the frame at that location was most likely a C-channel which meant we couldn’t access the bracket from the front side, ahead of the door frame. So we welded it from the front side, ground it down and hammered the pin into the hinge.

Now it’s good as used (see difference between left and right sides). The door opens and closes just fine. I’ll just coat it with some something to protect it until I get the car repainted.
